Several of those (Gemini, Groq, Mistral, and OpenRouter's free models) have a genuinely free tier, and the plugin has one-click presets and direct signup links for them, so this can run at zero cost if that's what you need. The key is encrypted before it's stored, and every request happens server-side \u2014 your key never reaches the browser.<\/p>\n\n

External services<\/h3>\n\n
This plugin does not work without connecting to an external AI service, since generating an answer requires sending the visitor's question (and a short excerpt of matching site content) to an AI model. You choose which provider to connect in the plugin's settings, and supply your own API key for it. No data is sent to any of these services until you configure a key and a visitor asks a question through the chat widget.<\/p>\n\n
For every request, the plugin sends: the visitor's typed question, a short excerpt (up to a few hundred words) from your own site's posts\/pages that matched the question, and \u2014 if you've enabled \"remember conversation\" \u2014 the last few prior messages in that visitor's session. No names, email addresses, IP addresses, or other visitor identifiers are included in this request. This happens only when a visitor actively submits a question in the chat widget.<\/p>\n\n
